Also called: property tax, veteran exemption, disabled veteran exemption, 7-37-5, 7-37-5.1, certificate of eligibility, May 1, Alamogordo, Tularosa, La Luz, Cloudcroft, Holloman.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Both exemptions are State law; the New Mexico entries on the $10,000 veteran exemption and the proportional disabled veteran exemption set out who qualifies and how the Department of Veterans' Services certifies it. In Otero County the Assessor, 1104 N White Sands Boulevard, Suite B, Alamogordo (575-437-5310, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), applies them. The deadline. The Assessor's page announces, in capitals, that the filing deadline for 2026 exemptions, including disabled veterans, was Friday, May 1, 2026, in line with the State rule of 30 days after the notice of value, which the Assessor mails by April 1. Moving between counties. The page reprints the State rule (3.6.7.25 F NMAC): when a veteran's certificate is presented for a first claim in the county, the Assessor checks whether the exemption is still claimed in another county, denies it if the full amount is used there, and grants only the unclaimed part if it is partly used. What is out of date. That reprinted rule speaks of "a full $4,000"; the exemption is $10,000 since 2025, and since tax year 2026 the disabled veteran exemption follows the rating rather than applying only at 100 percent, as the New Mexico entries explain.
