Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The North Carolina Judicial Branch lists Onslow (District 5) among the counties with an operating veterans treatment court. These courts work with veterans "with a substance use, mental health, or co-occurring disorder" and repeated offences, connecting them with the benefits and treatment their service earned, under the adult treatment court standards. What the county does. Onslow County holds the federal money and some of the staff. On June 15, 2026 the Board of Commissioners assigned the rest of two grants, a SAMHSA Veterans Treatment Court Expansion Grant (total budget $1,199,804) and a Justice Department Veterans Treatment Court Discretionary Grant, to the court's operation and expansion. On September 21, 2026 it amended its memorandum of agreement with the Administrative Office of the Courts and Judge James Moore for managing and coordinating the court, raising the court's mentor coordinator from half time to 0.8 of a post, paid from the Justice Department grant. Onslow County Veteran Services has a service officer assigned to the court. Entry. Neither the county nor the Judicial Branch publishes written eligibility rules for this court, so no discharge or rating test is stated. Referral comes through the criminal case: ask the defence lawyer or the court about it, or call Onslow County Veteran Services on 910-347-3309.
