Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Onslow County Veteran Services "informs, advises, and assists Onslow County veterans, their dependents, or survivors" with VA, State and local benefits. It serves veterans, spouses, widows and children living in Onslow County: disability compensation and pension, enrolment at VA medical centres, education and vocational rehabilitation, home loan certificates, burial, life insurance and appeals. It is in the Onslow County Government Center, 234 NW Corridor Boulevard, Suite 201, Jacksonville 28540, open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone 910-347-3309. Claims are by appointment, in person or by phone. The office's checklist asks a veteran to bring the DD-214, a list of the conditions to claim, civilian doctors' names and addresses, the latest VA award letter, marriage and divorce details, dependants' dates of birth and Social Security numbers, and a voided cheque; a survivor brings the death certificate and the funeral bill as well. Walk-in or drop box. The State's forms for the property tax exclusion (NCDVA-9), veteran licence plates and the disabled veteran hunting and fishing licence can be brought in without an appointment or left in the office's secure drop box in the Government Center, and are checked and returned by post. The office has a service officer assigned to the Onslow County Veterans Treatment Court; see that entry. Burial. The office's burial page is out of date in two places. It says VA "will pay a $300 plot allowance"; VA pays $1,002 for a plot for a death on or after October 1, 2025 and $1,032 on or after October 1, 2026, and the same again as a burial allowance where the death was not service-connected. It also says claims for the service-connected allowance of up to $2,000 "must be filed within 2 years"; VA sets no time limit for a service-connected burial allowance, and none for a plot allowance either. Check VA's own table before relying on the county page.
