Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

These are the State exemptions in Real Property Tax Law 458-a and 458-b; see the New York entries. Onondaga County does not assess property; its towns and the City of Syracuse do, and the County's local laws set the exemption only for the County tax. Each town, village, the City and each school district decides for its own, so ask the assessor what applies to each line of the bill. Alternative veterans exemption (458-a). Local Law 1 of 1998 adopted it, and Local Law 1 of 2007 raised the County's ceilings from the 2007 rolls to $36,000 for wartime service, $24,000 more for combat service and $120,000 for the disability part (assessed value times half the rating), each scaled by the assessing unit's equalization rate. The statute would let any county go to $45,000, $30,000 and $150,000 without being a high-appreciation municipality; Onondaga has not raised its ceilings since 2007. Local Law 4 of 2001 extends it to Gold Star parents. Cold War exemption (458-b). Local Law 7 of 2009, as amended by Local Law 9 of 2010, grants 15% of assessed value up to $36,000, plus the disability part up to $120,000. Local Law 5 of 2018 removed the ten-year limit from the 2018 rolls, so it lasts as long as the owner qualifies. The full exemption (458-a(11)). From rolls with taxable status dates on or after October 1, 2026 a county may fully exempt the home of a veteran VA considers permanently and totally disabled from service. Onondaga County had not adopted it: no such local law is among those adopted through 2026 or those introduced for October 6, 2026. A permanently and totally disabled veteran keeps the alternative exemption's disability part and should ask the town and school district whether they have adopted the full exemption for their own taxes. How to apply. The County's Real Property Tax Services links only the State's forms; file with your town or City assessor by the taxable status date, usually March 1. The Veterans Service Agency can help.
