We will strive to provide customer service that is unparalleled, and we will treat our customers with the respect and dignity they deserve."
The staff. County Veterans Service Officer Matthew Young - a 23-year Army veteran who served in the European Theater, completed two combat tours in Iraq, worked as a full-time Army recruiter and retired to Rhinelander five years before his election - took office February 17, 2026 at Grade K, Step 1, with sixteen additional PTO hours. Assistant CVSO Samantha Negron serves beside him. The office's annual reports (2019 through 2023) are posted on the department's page, and its site carries PACT Act, healthcare, pension, service-connected disability, death and burial and education pages beside a Requesting Military Records guide and a Find Your CVSO/TVSO listing.
The succession. Tammy Javenkoski retired February 27, 2026 after twenty years as CVSO; Assistant CVSO Jason Dailey, who had served more than a decade, resigned the day after the board passed him over and left February 27 with her. The board's February 17, 2026 session - the public comment from Vilas County CVSO Brian Thomas, from Brian Jopek chairing the county's Veterans Service Commission ("Jason is qualified, people. Mr. Young is not"), from the Bennetts and from Javenkoski herself ("There is literally no one in this world that knows better than I who would be best to succeed me") - is in the board's entry below. The February 17 to 27 window had both officers in the seat, the overlap training the resolution funds.
The commission. The county's Veterans Service Commission - Brian Jopek (chair) and Mark Espeseth sat on the 2026 hiring panel; Dawn Spurgeon was appointed to a three-year term expiring January 2029 on January 20, 2026 - interviews candidates with the Human Services Committee and advises the board; see the board's entry.
