Old Saybrook Military and Veterans Property Tax Exemptions

Old Saybrook’s assessor details the wartime exemption on a discharge filed with the Town Clerk by September 30, the income-driven additional exemption February 1 to October 1, a disability exemption raised at age 65 to the equivalent of a 100 percent rating, and the Form D-2 dwelling exemption due January 1.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Old Saybrook.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s military and veterans exemptions page requires an original or certified copy of the honorable discharge or similar document with the Old Saybrook Town Clerk, filing deadline September 30. The additional veterans exemption “has certain income restrictions” and is filed February 1st through October 1st. Active duty military and active duty National Guard members may exempt one vehicle on a yearly application, and veterans and active duty members may claim a leased vehicle refund by the December 31 following the assessment year. Veterans claiming a disability exemption submit VA proof of the percentage during the assessment period, refiling only on a change; a qualifying veteran over 65 is told the exemption “may be increased to the equivalent of a 100% disability rating” on proof of age - under C.G.S. 12-81(20) as now written the age-65 tier is $3,500, the amount of the top rating tier, not the 12-81(83) dwelling exemption. The assessor’s page separately describes the permanently and totally disabled veteran’s exemption: applied to the dwelling, or to one motor vehicle if the veteran owns no real estate, on Form D-2 with a current VA service-related disability letter, annually by January 1. No consolidated code was found on the town’s site, and the town did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey; no local option was found, so ask the assessor.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it.
