Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Title 47, section 1135.2 authorizes Service Oklahoma to issue special plates "in recognition of their service or awards". A few are worth knowing because of how they are charged. No special plate fee. The Congressional Medal of Honor plate, for any resident recipient, on each vehicle: "There shall be no registration fee for the issuance of this plate." The Purple Heart plate, for a resident with certification of the award, and for an unremarried surviving spouse on one vehicle, "shall be exempt from the fee provided by this section for special license plates"; the ordinary registration fee is still owed. Issued in place of the ordinary registration fee. The prisoner of war plate, for former prisoners of war on up to two vehicles and an unremarried surviving spouse on one; the killed in action plate, for the unremarried spouse of a service member killed in action, on up to two vehicles; and the Gold Star families plate, for the parents, siblings, half-siblings or grandparents of a service member killed while on active duty, on up to two vehicles. For each the plate fee is "in addition to all other registration fees provided by law, except the registration fees levied by Section 1132", so it replaces the annual registration fee rather than adding to it. Everything else. National Guard and Air National Guard plates for active or retired members, branch of service plates, war and campaign plates such as the Vietnam veteran plate, and decoration plates for the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star and Bronze Star. Subsection C sets the fee: "Unless otherwise provided by this section, the fee for such plates shall be Eight Dollars ($8.00) and shall be in addition to all other registration fees". Guard retirees prove eligibility once, not annually. How to apply. Most plates need the DD-214 or award documentation mailed with the plate application to Service Oklahoma; renewals can be done at a tag agent. Service Oklahoma's specialty plate catalogue lists the current designs.
