What it helps with, from the office's Common Questions: copies of the DD-214 ("Our office can assist you in obtaining a copy of your form DD214") and its certification ("You can stop by our office" to have discharge papers certified); pension eligibility ("Please Call our office to see if you are eligible for pension"); assisted-living and nursing-home aid ("There is a program by which a veteran or surviving spouse may obtain monetary assistance to help pay the cost of assisted living or nursing home. The veteran must have served at least one day during a time of war"); increased compensation when service-connected disabilities worsen; VA health-care priority groups; and burial and markers ("All veterans who were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions are eligible for a grave marker or headstone provided by Veterans Affairs and burial in a National Cemetery"). On the property tax exemption the office is blunt: "Only veterans that are rated as 100% Permanent and Totally disabled are eligible for this benefit."
The office is a State-created one: "On March 22, 1945, the S.C. General Assembly adopted a bill creating a VA Office in each of the state's 46 counties. The Oconee County VA Officer is appointed by the Governor from recommendation of the County Legislative Delegation."
