Nye County Recorder: Recording Military Discharge Papers

The Nye County Recorder records a military discharge and, quoting NRS 247.110, excepts it from the paper and margin rules every other document must meet. NRS 419.020 makes recording an honorable discharge free, but the Recorder's fee schedule lists no discharge line, and its online records are generally open to the public.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, recorder, Deborah Beatty, discharge papers, NRS 419.020, NRS 247.110, nyerecorder.net, SB 79, confidential information.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

NRS 419.020 requires every county recorder to record a certificate of honorable discharge "free of any charge therefor"; see the Nevada entry. The Nye County Recorder, Deborah Beatty, with offices at 101 Radar Road, Tonopah, (775-482-8116), and 170 N. Floyd Street, Pahrump, (775-751-6340), says it will record documents while you wait and runs an online search and copy service at nyerecorder.net. The format waiver is local and real. The Recorder's General Recording Requirements page (read 2026-10-21) reproduces NRS 247.110's paper-size, one-inch-margin and three-inch first-page-corner rules and expressly excepts a "military discharge" from them, so a DD-214 need not be reformatted to be recorded - the same exemption Washoe records. The Recorder also maintains a Confidential Information section under NRS 247 and Senate Bill 79, with forms to release or redact personal identifying information in recorded documents. What the pages do not say. The Recorder's published schedule of fees (revised January 1, 2020) lists no line for a military discharge, so it neither charges a fee for one nor prints the statutory free rule - a veteran asked to pay for recording an honorable discharge should cite NRS 419.020. The pages also do not say whether a recorded discharge appears in the nyerecorder.net index; recorded documents in Nevada are generally open to public inspection, and Clark County publishes them, so a veteran weighing whether to record a DD-214 should ask the Recorder how it is handled first. Recording a discharge is always optional.
