Nueces County Veterans and Social Services: Veterans Service Office
Nueces County's veterans service officer helps veterans and survivors claim VA compensation, pension, survivor and burial benefits, file appeals and debt waivers, and obtain discharge papers and medals, free and by appointment only. Call 361-888-0820. The office shares a department with the county's social services.
Also called: VCSO, veterans county service officer, claims help, appeals, debt waiver, Corpus Christi, Veterans and Social Services.
For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.
The Nueces County Veterans and Social Services Department houses the county's veterans county service office under Government Code section 434.032; see the Texas entry. Its services are free, as section 434.036 requires.
What it does. Staff help veterans and survivors put together the forms and evidence for a VA claim and, if VA denies it, the statements and forms for an appeal. The department lists service-connected compensation, the nonservice-connected pension, appeals, debt waivers, the survivors pension, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, burial and plot allowances, VA grave markers, requests for a DD-214, corrections of military records, and medals and decorations. It refers veterans for VA education, health care and home loans and the State's Veterans Land Board programmes. It also runs the county's emergency financial assistance grant; see the separate entry.
Where. Appointment only, no walk-ins: 901 Leopard Street, Room 302.01, Corpus Christi 78401, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed noon to 1 p.m. Phone 361-888-0820. The grant brochure and the Court Administrator's directory still give the department's former address, 602 N. Staples Street, Suite 180, in the Regional Transportation Authority building.
One department, two offices. Section 434.032(a)(1) requires the office in a county of 200,000 or more to be separate and distinct from other county offices. Nueces County runs it inside a combined Veterans and Social Services Department whose mission statement covers both, and the county does not say how the veterans office is kept apart. The department's director, the county veterans service officer, has also overseen the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery since October 1, 2021.
