Nueces County Veterans Assistance Grant Program: Emergency Financial Assistance
Emergency help with rent or mortgage, utilities, food and transportation for Nueces County veterans, their dependents and unremarried surviving spouses, paid from a Texas Veterans Commission grant and means-tested. It takes only an honorable or general discharge.
Also called: emergency assistance, financial assistance, rent, mortgage, utilities, food, transportation, Fund for Veterans Assistance, FVA, surviving spouse, Social Services.
For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.
The Nueces County Veterans Assistance Grant Program gives emergency financial help from a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission's Fund for Veterans' Assistance. On December 10, 2025 the Commissioners Court ratified the county's application for the 2026-2027 grant, for up to $150,000 with no county match.
Who. A Nueces County resident who is a veteran with an honorable or general (under honorable conditions) discharge, a dependent of such a veteran living in the county, or the veteran's surviving spouse who was legally married to the veteran and has not remarried. The brochure defines a dependent as a child, stepchild or adopted child under 18, a disabled adult child who needs an adult's care, an adult child under 23 at college full time, or the legal spouse. Income guidelines apply, and the county says the programme "is not an entitlement program based on veteran status".
What. Basic needs: rent or mortgage, water, gas and electricity, food, and transportation.
How. Initial eligibility is decided at the veterans office and final eligibility by the county's Department of Social Services. Bring the DD-214 showing the discharge, photo ID, the Social Security card, the marriage or death certificate as relevant, the mortgage statement, lease or rent receipts, current utility bills, 30 days of income for everyone in the household, proof of work search for every employable member, and a medical report if disabled and under a doctor's care. A household eligible for TANF must show it has applied, and a request for food help needs a pending SNAP application. The department's "click here to apply" link to an online application returned "page doesn't exist" on October 3, 2026, so book through the office on 361-888-0820. Help depends on grant funds.
