Nueces County Clerk: Thank A Vet Card, Free DD-214 Recording and Free Assumed Name Filings
The Nueces County Clerk records and certifies a DD-214 free, issues a free Thank A Vet discount card honoured by about 70 local businesses, and waives the $18 assumed name (DBA) fee for veterans. Its two pages on who may see a recorded DD-214 disagree with each other, and both are narrower than Government Code 552.140.
Also called: DD-214, DD214, county clerk, Thank A Vet, Thank A Veteran, veteran ID card, discount, assumed name, DBA, 71.155, Corpus Christi, Robstown.
DD-214 and the card. The Nueces County Clerk records a DD-214 and certifies copies free; that is the State rule (see the Texas entry). Once the DD-214 is recorded, or on checking that one was recorded earlier, the Clerk issues a free Thank A Vet ID card, which participating businesses, listed on the Clerk's site (73 in October 2026) and marked by a window decal, honour with a discount. The card is not an official State ID. The Clerk started the programme in 2015. Main office: Nueces County Courthouse, 901 Leopard Street, Room 201, Corpus Christi, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., 361-888-0580; there is also a Robstown office.
Who can see a recorded DD-214. The Clerk's pages give two answers: the programme page says recorded DD-214s are "viewable ONLY by the veteran and his or her immediate family", and the veteran information page says they "can only be accessed by the service member, his or her legal guardian, or authorization from the service member". Government Code 552.140 lets all of these inspect the record and get free copies: the veteran; a legal guardian; the spouse, a child or a parent, or if none is living the nearest living relative; the personal representative of the estate; a person holding a power of attorney from one of those; another governmental body; and a funeral home helping with the burial.
Assumed names. The Clerk's fee for an assumed name certificate is $18 for one owner, plus 50 cents for each other owner, and the same $18 to abandon one; "Filing fee is waived for Veterans", under the clerk's option in Business and Commerce Code 71.155(a-1). A corporation or LLC files its assumed name with the Secretary of State instead.
