Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The office. The Nuckolls County Veterans Service Office is in the courthouse, 150 S. Main Street, Nelson, NE 68961 (mailing address PO Box 382), phone 402-225-3971 extension 9, [email protected], open Monday and Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (8:30 a.m. in the State's directory, updated October 26, 2026). The Veterans Service Officer is Kady Schnitker, who is also Clay County's officer on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Clay Center: Clay County's Board appointed her its own Veterans Service Officer from June 1, 2026, after Hamilton County ended the agreement under which its officer had served Clay County (see the Clay County entry). The office helps veterans and dependents with VA benefit applications and supporting documents and with VA medical centre eligibility. What the county lists. The County Benefits page names county veterans aid (see that entry); a bronze grave flag holder reflecting the veteran's wartime era, inventoried each year and replaced when damaged; registration of DD-214s, after which the veteran "may call us from any where in the world" for a certified copy; homestead help, the office obtaining each year "a letter from the VA Regional Office" naming eligible veterans and widows for the Assessor; and grave registration, with a card sent to the State and a Presidential Memorial Certificate ordered for the family of every deceased county veteran. The page's closing phone number, (308) 225-3971, has the wrong area code. Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries). The money. The office (0100-803) spent $30,132.87 in 2023-2024 and $24,314.39 in 2024-2025, and the 2025-2026 budget adopts $35,128.50: the officer's $19,000.00, part-time salary of $5,000.00, $2,000.00 for markers ($1,357.22 spent in 2024-2025) and a $500 aid line (see the aid entry).
