Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Northumberland County's Veteran's Affairs office is the office every Pennsylvania county must have: a director of veterans affairs appointed by the county (16 Pa.C.S. 15524). See the Pennsylvania entry on county directors for what the director does and the State programmes that go through the office. What the county publishes. The page, under the Area Agency on Aging, says the office "provides a wide range of services and benefits to veterans, active duty service members, and their families", with information "on healthcare, education and training, employment, disability compensation, pensions, housing, and other services and benefits", and asks: "Please call: 570-495-2395." It names no director and no county benefit of its own. The Area Agency on Aging and Veterans Affairs were merged in January 2022, and the page's location is the Agency's: 322 North Second Street, Sunbury, PA 17801; toll free 1-877-622-2251, local 570-495-2395, fax 570-495-2396. The Agency's resource list gives its Veteran's Program 570-988-4213. Two addresses. The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs' list of county directors (September 9, 2026) names Ryan Miller as director at 25 W. Main St., P.O. Box 37, Sunbury, PA 17801, phone 570-495-2364, fax 570-495-2396, [email protected]; the county's own Right-to-Know list also names Ryan Miller for Veteran's Affairs. Call before going in person. The Board's year. On March 3, 2026 the Commissioners authorized "the purchase of 30,672 American cemetery flags for veteran's graves from Flag Zone LLC, Gilbertsville, for $26,377.92, on behalf of the Department of Veterans Affairs" - the Memorial Day flags the county must place (16 Pa.C.S. 15522). On July 7, 2026 the director gave the Board a departmental update, and the Board proclaimed July 2026 Veterans' Month. On October 7, 2025 it refunded the county share of a 2024 tax bill ($947.06) "based upon a delay in receipt of required property owners' veteran's exemption" - the State's disabled veterans' real estate tax exemption, applied through this office, reaching back to a bill already paid. The county's burial allowance, headstone and flagholder amounts are not published; ask the office, and see the Pennsylvania entry on county burial and grave benefits.
