Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of North Reading grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessors’ Real Estate Exemptions page prints each veterans’ clause at the statute: $400 (FY27) under clause 22 for a veteran honorably discharged with a 10 per cent or more service-connected certificate from the VA, $750 under 22A, $1,250 under 22B, $1,500 under 22C, 100 per cent under 22D, $1,000 under 22E and 100 per cent under 22F, each marked “/ Minimum”, and asks for two consecutive years’ Massachusetts residence or six months’ domicile before induction, which is what the statute now says. A note by the page’s asterisks says that by town meeting vote some items increase by the cost of living adjustment annually; the asterisks sit on its clause 17E lines, not the veterans’ clauses. The Veterans Department names Chris Thomann the Veteran Services Director and Catherine McGloughlin the Administrative Assistant at 235 North Street (978-664-6012), where the EOVS directory lists Christopher Thomann with the same address (978-357-5212). The department’s services page counts “Property tax exemptions for qualified Veterans who are at least 10% disabled” among what it files, and describes chapter 115 assistance for eligible veterans, their dependents, widows and parents of widows. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through North Reading Veterans Department: Chris Thomann, Veteran Services Director. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
