North Canaan Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

North Canaan’s assessor page gives the DD-214, additional-veterans and disability deadlines, lists a local option veterans exemption without printing an amount, and a posted notice describes the dwelling exemption for a veteran with a permanent and total rating, with the additional exemption at the income limits the office prints.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, North Canaan.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor page’s deadline list requires an honorable discharge DD-214 filed with the Town Clerk by September 30, and an additional veterans application and a totally disabled application filed by October 1. On the additional exemption it says “veterans who are receiving an exemption under 12-81 of the CT General Statutes may also be eligible for an additional exemption providing the same income requirements are met,” and prints those limits for the current application period as $46,300 for an unmarried person and $56,500 for a married couple. The page’s program list also carries a “Local Option Veterans Exemption” among the programs the office administers. No veteran amounts are printed. The office’s posted notice, “New Property Tax Exemption for Veterans with a P&T Disability Rating – Effective 10/1/2024,” describes the dwelling exemption: a DD-214 on file with the Town Clerk and proof of the qualifying permanent and total rating to the assessor by March 31, and the law “fully exempts from property tax either (1) a dwelling the veteran owns and lives in as his or her primary residence or, (2) if the veteran does not own a dwelling, one motor vehicle he or she owns and keeps in this state,” with a spouse’s vehicle eligible if the veteran owns neither. The notice says letters will be sent to veterans who already have a disability rating to see whether they qualify. North Canaan did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey. No code was found on a readable host.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
