Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of North Attleborough grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessor’s Office tax exemptions page gives “22 a-f (Tax Exemption $800 New Amount FY07)” for a war-service disability of 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient or a surviving spouse, $1,500 under 22A and $2,000 under 22E (a 100 percent rating, incapable of working). The same page prints $350 under clause 17D, $1,000 under 41C and $875 under clause 37, each also twice its statutory amount of $175, $500 and $437.50. An addition that reaches every personal exemption is what section 5C½ does; clause 22J reaches the veterans’ alone. The page names no clause, and no town meeting or council vote was found in the town’s online records; ask the assessors what the town has accepted. Its fiscal 2024 exemptions-granted table agrees: 128 clause 22 exemptions at $102,400, $800 each; it also records two clause 22D exemptions for veterans killed in action, listed without terms. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through North Attleborough Veterans’ Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
