For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of North Andover grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessor’s Abatement & Exemption Guide, a town PDF, says of the disabled veterans’ exemptions that they “vary from $400 - $1,000 to a full exemption”, which is the statutes’ own range, $400 under clause 22 to $1,000 under 22E, with 22D and 22F full; the guide names no option, and no clause 22I or 22J acceptance was found on the town’s site or in its records. The guide also asks that the veteran have lived in Massachusetts for at least the past five years or six months before entering the service, the wording the statute carried before the HERO Act. The Veterans Services page names Joseph LeBlanc the District Director of Veterans Services at 120 Main Street (978-688-9525), where the EOVS directory lists the same office. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through North Andover Veterans Services: Joseph LeBlanc, District Director. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
