Norfolk Free Meter Parking for Decorated Veterans and Former Prisoners of War

Free parking at Norfolk on-street meters for a vehicle with Purple Heart, valor medal, Medal of Honor, Prisoner of War, or Pearl Harbor Survivor plates, and for an unremarried surviving spouse with most of those plates. Disabled Veteran plates are not on the list.

Also called: parking, meters, Purple Heart, Medal of Honor, POW, Pearl Harbor.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Section 25.1-125.1 of the Norfolk City Code lets a veteran issued Pearl Harbor Survivor, Purple Heart, Bronze Star or Silver Star, Air Medal, Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, Air Force Cross, or Distinguished Flying Cross, Medal of Honor, or Prisoner of War plates park without charge at a city on-street metered space. So can a person driving that veteran in the plated vehicle. An unremarried surviving spouse issued the same plates, except Pearl Harbor Survivor, has the same right. The exemption covers on-street meters only, not city garages, and time limits and reserved-space rules still apply. Disabled Veteran plates are not on the list, unlike the similar rule in Virginia Beach.
