Two state-run transitional housing programs for homeless veterans, Veterans Haven North in Glen Gardner and Veterans Haven South in Winslow Township, with counseling, addiction treatment and job training. Residents must be sober and registered with VA health care.
Also called: Veterans Haven North, Veterans Haven South, Glen Gardner, Winslow Township, homeless veterans, transitional housing, Grant and Per Diem, Bringing Veterans Home.
The Department of Veterans Affairs runs two transitional housing facilities for homeless veterans: Veterans Haven North at 200 Sanatorium Road, Glen Gardner, in Hunterdon County, and Veterans Haven South at 301 Spring Garden Road, Winslow Township, in Camden County. The fiscal 2027 budget gives them $7,668,000.
What they offer. Long-term psychological, social and vocational rehabilitation, with staff in mental health, addiction counseling, vocational counseling and nursing, and 24-hour staffing. The Army benefits library describes three tracks: bridge housing of about 90 days for a veteran waiting for a permanent placement, clinical treatment, and service intensive transitional housing.
Who is admitted. Veterans Haven South's admission criteria: the veteran must be homeless, must be a veteran under VA's guidelines, must be registered with the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, must be free of drugs and alcohol at admission, and must provide a negative tuberculosis test from the last six months. Residents agree to random drug and alcohol testing. A limited number who do not meet the criteria may be admitted under VA's Grant and Per Diem program. Veterans Haven North's admission packet is on its own page.
Other help. Bringing Veterans Home, run by the Department of Community Affairs and funded at $11,000,000 in the fiscal 2027 budget, helps homeless and housing-unstable veterans find housing. The department's service officers can refer a veteran to either program.
