NJ Transit Half Fare for Disabled Veterans

Half fare on NJ Transit buses and trains at all times for a disabled veteran, except on peak commuter trains excluded from excursion fares. The statute borrows the civil service definition, which needs a compensable disability from war service.

Also called: N.J.S.A. 27:1A-66, N.J.S.A. 27:1A-65, reduced fare, half fare, NJ Transit, P.L.2017, c.20.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

N.J.S.A. 27:1A-66 directs the reduced fare program to carry senior citizens 65 and older, persons with disabilities "and all disabled veterans" on bus and rail "at all times bus or rail service is offered ... at one-half of the regular adult rates of fare". The one exception is commuter trains in the peak that NJ Transit has designated as ineligible for round trip excursion fares. P.L.2017, c.20 added "all disabled veterans". The catch is the definition. N.J.S.A. 27:1A-65 defines "disabled veteran" by reference to N.J.S.A. 11A:5-1, the civil service definition: a veteran eligible for compensation for a service-connected disability "from war service", with the status determined by the Commissioner of Veterans Affairs. A peacetime veteran with a service-connected disability does not meet those words, though he or she may qualify as a person with a disability under the program's general test. Ask NJ Transit for the reduced fare card, bringing the department's determination or a VA letter.
