New Jersey Veteran and Gold Star Family Designation on Driver Licences
The Motor Vehicle Commission prints a veteran designation on a driver licence or ID for a resident discharged honorably or under general honorable conditions from the Armed Forces, the reserves or the National Guard, and a Gold Star Family designation for a close relative of a member who died on active duty.
Also called: N.J.S.A. 39:3-10f6, veteran designation, Gold Star Family designation, DD-214, NGB-22, DD-256, county veteran ID card, P.L.2019, c.500.
N.J.S.A. 39:3-10f6 requires the Motor Vehicle Commission, on satisfactory proof, to designate on an initial, renewal or probationary licence, and under N.J.S.A. 39:3-29.3 on a non-driver ID, that the holder is a veteran.
Who. A resident "discharged honorably or under general honorable conditions" from any branch of the Armed Forces, a reserve component, or the National Guard of New Jersey or another state. A Guard member who never served on federal active duty qualifies with an NGB-22.
Proof. A DD-214, DD-215, DD-256 or NGB-22 or another approved separation form, federal activation orders under 10 U.S.C. 672 or 12301, a county veteran identification card, or VA's Veteran Identification Card. P.L.2019, c.500 set this list so that one standard of proof works across state and local programs. Bring it to an MVC licensing centre; the designation cannot be added online.
What it is not. The statute says the designation is not sufficient proof of veteran status for any government purpose that requires documentation. Businesses use it for discounts.
Gold Star families. The same section provides a Gold Star Family designation for the spouse, domestic or civil union partner, parent, sibling, child, legal guardian or custodian of a member of the Armed Forces or National Guard who died on active duty. Proof is a certification from the Department of New Jersey of American Gold Star Mothers or a similar organization, or a DD 1300 or DD 2064 with proof of relationship. The designation matters because other statutes key off it: free admission to state parks and forests under N.J.S.A. 13:1L-12.1, and no fee for a professional or occupational licence under N.J.S.A. 45:1-15.6.
