Newport News Disabled Veteran Vehicle Tax Exemption

Newport News exempts one automobile or pickup of a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total. A replacement vehicle can be designated only in January or February of the next tax year while the first is still owned.

Also called: car tax, personal property, vehicle tax, Newport News car tax.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Section 40-7.06(b) of the City Code applies the statewide one-vehicle exemption to automobiles and pickup trucks owned and used primarily by or for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent, and total; a vehicle owned by a married person qualifies if either spouse is the veteran. Apply on the Commissioner's Veteran Exemption Qualification Application with the VA summary of benefits letter. Two local rules. The city code defines the vehicle as "only automobiles and pickup trucks", where the statute also names panel trucks. And a veteran who already has the exemption on a vehicle he still owns cannot move it to a newly bought vehicle until January or February of the next tax year. The Commissioner's page gives the start as January 1, 2023; the statute and the city code say January 1, 2021.
