Newport News taxes one vehicle of a veteran with limb loss, blindness, or a permanent and total disability at $1.00 per $100. The limb loss and blindness routes need no rating.
Also called: car tax, reduced rate, personal property, amputee, blind, one dollar.
For: Veteran or service member.
Where it applies
Written for the jurisdictions listed here.
Section 40-220.9 of the City Code, in force since 1994, taxes not more than one motor vehicle owned and regularly used by a disabled veteran at $1.00 per $100 of assessed value. The Commissioner's page gives the same rate. The ordinance copies the class in Code of Virginia section 58.1-3506(A)(19) as alternatives: a veteran who has lost, or lost the use of, one or both legs, or an arm or a hand, or who is blind, or who is permanently and totally disabled, with a service-connected disability. Limb loss or blindness qualifies at any rating.
The ordinance names "the department of veterans' affairs" as the certifying agency. The statute names the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, which issues the written statement a veteran brings to the Commissioner.
