Newport News Real Estate Tax Deferral for Permanent and Total Disability

Newport News offers a disabled owner under 65 a deferral of real estate tax, not an exemption, with income up to $50,000 and assets up to $200,000. Its exemption program is for owners 65 and older only.

Also called: tax deferral, tax relief, property tax, elderly and disabled, solid waste fee.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Newport News runs two real estate programs for older and disabled owners, and a permanently and totally disabled owner under 65 can use only one of them. The deferral is open to an owner who is 65 or permanently and totally disabled, with combined income of everyone living in the home of $50,000 or less and combined assets of $200,000 or less, excluding the home. Deferred tax is postponed, not forgiven. The exemption program, which forgives tax, is limited to owners 65 and older, at much lower limits. Either application is also used to decide eligibility for the city's Solid Waste Fee Grant Relief, so a deferral applicant does not file separately for it. If multiple people other than a spouse are on the deed, all must qualify. The Commissioner mails a decision in October. A disabled veteran who meets the 100% permanent and total test uses the full exemption instead.
