Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Michigan's county clerks keep the military discharge records; the recording, confidentiality and the free copy are MCL 35.32 and 35.41 (the State entries). What Newaygo's own page adds is the office's statement of the same rules. The clerk's Military Discharges page: "Following discharge from the Service, veterans may place a copy of their discharge (Form DD-214) on file with the County Clerk. A certified copy is available free of charge to the veteran." The page quotes the confidentiality statute - "Pursuant to MCL 35.32, a military service discharge record is confidential and may be viewed or copied only by the veteran, a person with the veteran's permission, the surviving heirs of the veteran, a veterans' service officer, the Michigan veterans trust fund, or a person employed by the county department of veterans' affairs who provides counseling for veterans, if access to that record is necessary to aid the veteran, or the surviving spouse or a dependent of the veteran in applying for benefits available to the veteran" - and the free-copy rule: "Pursuant to MCL 35.41, one certified copy of records held by the County Clerk's Office shall be provided at no cost to a veteran upon written request with the following documents per county policy: Issue to Veteran: Driver license or state issued photo identification. Issue to Widow or Dependent: Driver license or state issue photo identification; and Death Certificate of the veteran." A DD-214 application form is posted on the page. Where and who. County Clerk Jason VanderStelt, 1087 Newell St, PO Box 885, White Cloud, MI 49349; (231) 689-7235, fax (231) 689-7241; M-F 8am-5pm ("Birth Certificate Requests and Marriage License Applications can only be processed until 4:15pm Monday - Friday"); the clerk is also Clerk to the Board of Commissioners and of the Circuit Court. The Register of Deeds (Stewart K. Sanders, 231-689-7246) records the land records and posts no discharge text - the military-discharge record is the Clerk's.
