New Milford Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

New Milford’s assessor gives the veterans’ exemption on a DD-214 filed with the Town Clerk before October 1, takes the state additional exemption February 1 through October 1, and is recorded by OLR’s survey as offering a $10,000 wartime local option.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, New Milford.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s veterans page requires an honorable discharge, form DD-214, filed with the Town Clerk before October 1 with service in an eligible war period for the basic veterans’ exemption, and a VA letter showing the rate of disability filed with the assessor for the disability exemptions, a one-time filing unless the rate changes, with notice when the veteran reaches 65. It cites state statutes 12-81, 12-89, 12-90 and 12-95 and prints no amounts; the wartime exemption is $1,000 of assessed value and the disability schedule $2,000 to $3,500. The additional veterans’ exemption is applied for February 1 through October 1 for the October 1 grand list, with proof of all prior-year income including a copy of any federal return and SSA-1099, veterans’ disability income excluded, and Social Security excluded for a veteran rated 100 percent. That is the state program of 12-81g(a), twice the exemption already received, for income under the 12-81l limit; the 2026 grand list limits are $46,300 single and $56,500 married. New Milford’s application is OPM’s M-59a. OLR’s 2023 survey recorded New Milford’s wartime local option at $10,000, for income up to $49,100 married or $40,300 single, and the town as offering the 12-81g(b) exemption for a veteran rated 100 percent. No New Milford ordinance adopting either was found, and no code for the town was found on Municode or the town’s site. Ask the assessor.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
