For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s Veteran’s Exemptions sheet requires service of at least 90 days during a time of war or recognized military conflict, an honorable discharge, and the DD-214 filed with the Town Clerk by September 30, applied to the real estate or motor vehicle assessment for the next grand list. The disabled veteran exemption runs on the combined service-connected disability rating, and effective October 1, 2024, a veteran rated 100 percent permanently and totally disabled due to service-related injuries is eligible for the exemption off the vehicle or dwelling, with the VA rating letter filed with the assessor by March 31 for either type. The sheet’s additional state veterans’ exemption goes to veterans eligible for the basic exemption whose adjusted gross income meets the guidelines, at twice the regular exemption; the copy posted prints the state’s income requirements for the 2024 grand list, $53,400 for a married couple and $43,800 for a single person, with the sheet’s filing period February 1 to October 1, 2024. The surviving spouse of a veteran entitled to the exemption remains entitled to it. New Canaan did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey and no local option was found.
