New Britain’s Code § 22-20 gives $10,000 off assessment to a veteran or surviving spouse who qualifies for the state additional exemption under 12-81g and is a registered voter in the city.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, New Britain.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Code § 22-20, enacted under C.G.S. 12-81f by ordinances of November 2004 and amended by Resolution No. 33187-2 on August 17, 2015, has the assessor exempt $10,000 of property of a qualified veteran or qualified surviving spouse, from the October 1, 2015 grand list. The applicant must first have applied for and been approved for the state additional exemption under 12-81g, and the state form M-59 serves as the application. Approval carries to the next year, with a new filing every two years. The section adds a condition of its own: the veteran, spouse or surviving spouse must be a registered voter in New Britain on the assessment date. 12-81f itself sets no such condition. The assessor’s pages print no veterans’ amounts, and the Town Clerk’s military discharge page sends veterans who file a DD-214 to the assessor at 860-826-3323, so this entry rests on the ordinance. New Britain did not answer OLR’s 2023 survey.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
