New Bedford Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions (Clauses 22 to 22F)

New Bedford’s exemptions page prints the veterans’ clauses at a range of $400 to $2,500 off the tax bill with no per-clause breakdown and no acceptance named, so the entry asks the assessors to confirm; the city’s site answers 403 and the page was read through the Internet Archive’s capture of March 22, 2025.

Also called: property tax, clause 22, 22E, veterans exemption, assessors, New Bedford.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The City of New Bedford grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a city can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. newbedford-ma.gov answers 403 to curl and to the automated browser alike, so the Assessor’s Office and Veterans’ Services pages were read through the Internet Archive’s captures of March 13 and March 5, 2026, and the exemptions page through the capture of March 22, 2025, the newest the Archive holds. That page prints, under "Clauses 22, 22A, 22B, 22C, 22D, 22E, and Paraplegic - Disabled Veteran", that the clauses "provide exemptions from $400.00 up to $2500.00 for qualified veterans and their spouses (or surviving spouses)", without a per-clause breakdown and without naming an acceptance; no option named in the section produces that range, so the entry asks the assessors to confirm it. The page still prints the pre-HERO Act residence test, six months’ residence before entering the service or five years before filing, where the statute now asks six months’ domicile before entering service or two consecutive years before filing. It names the Purple Heart, the Gold Star parents, the paraplegic veteran’s total exemption and the surviving spouses the Acts of 2000 extended, beside clause 37A at $500. The Veterans’ Services page names Christopher G. Gomes the Director & Veterans’ Agent at 181 Hillman Street, Building #3 (508-991-6184), where the EOVS directory lists the same officer. The department’s page describes its mission as advocating for the Commonwealth’s veterans and directing the emergency financial assistance program under M.G.L. c. 115 for veterans and their dependents in need. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through New Bedford Veterans’ Services: Christopher G. Gomes, Director & Veterans’ Agent. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
