Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The office. The county's page puts the Nemaha County Veterans Service Office in the Wellness Center, 601 J Street, Auburn, NE 68305, phone 402-274-3419, [email protected], open Tuesday to Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the State's directory (updated October 26, 2026) gives Tuesday to Friday. The Board appointed James (Jim) Reed as Veterans Service Officer and Gene Mace as assistant for 2026 on January 14, 2026; the officer "serves under the direction of the Veterans' Service Board appointed by the Board of Commissioners". The page's mission includes spotlighting "the accomplishments of Nemaha County veterans in service and in the community", and its FAQ says "it's never too late to file a VA service-connected disability claim" and lists what to bring. What the county lists. The Veterans' Benefits page names the County Veterans' Aid Fund (see that entry), "Flag Holders. For placement on the grave of every veteran buried in Nemaha County", and "Transportation to VA medical appointments when necessary" (see the transportation entry), with the State's aid fund, tuition waiver, discharge replacement, grave registration and Veterans' Home applications, and federal claims. Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries). The Board's year. On September 24, 2025 the Board proclaimed the Annual Veterans Appreciation Day and Breakfast of October 25, 2025; on November 5, 2025 it approved the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs' memorandum of understanding for the claims database; and on June 17, 2026 it covered an $836.51 overrun in the office's 2025-2026 budget (Resolution 2026-22). The memorial. The 2025-2026 budget opened fund 1901, the Veterans Memorial Fund, with a $34,254.17 transfer for maintenance, yard beautification, "Veterans Wall & Grounds Repair" and memorial name engraving; it paid $1,378.35 in 2025-2026 (the May 20, 2026 claims to Grimm's Gardens, $1,104.46, and Becky Woltemath, $273.89), and the adopted 2026-2027 budget carries the remaining $32,875.82, including $10,000.00 for the wall and grounds and $5,000.00 for engraving names. The money. The adopted 2026-2027 budget gives the office (0100-803) $65,923.08, against $61,086.00 spent in 2025-2026, including $16,224.00 for veterans' drivers to doctor appointments.
