Nassau County Clerk: Discharge Recording, Veterans Discount ID and Peddler License
The Nassau County Clerk records a DD-214 free, returns the original with two certified copies, keeps it sealed, and issues a Veterans Discount Photo ID honoured by local businesses and the free veteran's peddler licence. The Clerk charges $2.50 for further copies, which Military Law 250 says must be free.
Also called: DD-214, DD214, County Clerk, Veterans Recognition Program, discount card, peddler license, Military Law 250, Mineola.
Recording discharges. The County Clerk records a DD-214 at any time after separation, free, returns the original and gives the veteran two certified copies at the time of recording. The record is sealed and not open to the public. See the New York entry on discharge recording.
The $2.50 copy fee. The Clerk's page lists "Discharge Papers (additional copy) $2.50". Military Law 250 requires every county clerk, the Nassau County Clerk included, "to furnish without charge to any veteran, or parent, spouse, dependent or child of the veteran, a certified copy". A veteran or family member asked to pay for a certified copy can point to the statute.
Veterans Recognition Program. After recording a DD-214, a veteran can get the Clerk's Veterans Discount Photo ID card, which participating businesses across Nassau County honour with their own discounts; the Clerk publishes the list by town.
Peddler licence. The Clerk issues the State's veteran's peddler licence free, in person, with a photo ID, proof of six months' residence, discharge papers and two passport photos; it stays valid while you live in the county, and town and village peddling rules still apply. The Clerk's page describes it as for honorably discharged veterans "and their spouses"; General Business Law 32 also asks that the veteran served in a war or overseas, and extends it to a surviving spouse. See the New York entry on the peddler licence.
