Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The State rules are the Ohio entry's: free recording, a record closed to the public for 75 years, one free certified copy, and the optional county veterans identification card (Revised Code 317.24, 317.27 and 317.241). What the Recorder publishes. "Military Service Discharges" are among the records the office keeps, indexed online from 1965 ("Military Discharges 1965"), with older records in the historical indexes. Two forms ask for a copy. The redacted form: "Only authorized parties can view and receive complete copies. All unauthorized parties will only be allowed to view and receive a redacted copy ... containing only the name, rank, date of birth, date of discharge, and type of discharge." The unredacted form has you tick your authority: the veteran; "a county veteran's service officer"; an attorney in fact, agent or other representative; a person a court authorizes; after death, an executor, administrator or heir; or a funeral director or designee. Both forms date from 2013 and describe the 2009 law (SB 248) that closed the records. What it does not say. The page sets out no fee for recording a discharge (the statute makes it free) and no Ohio veterans identification card; ask the office whether the county issues one. The office. Recorder Cindy Rodgers; Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; (740) 455-7107; [email protected].
