Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Michigan requires every county to keep a fund for the relief of indigent wartime veterans and their families (MCL 35.21; see the Michigan entry on the county veterans relief fund). Muskegon County's Department of Veterans Affairs administers the county's share; its services page lists "Soldiers & Sailors Relief - Emergency financial assistance for eligible wartime veterans and their widows! 231.724.7143 x2". The same office is the door to the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund, "emergency assistance for honorably discharged wartime veterans who have service of 180 days", whose county agent sits in the department (see the Michigan entry on the Trust Fund). A refusal by the county can be taken to the circuit court within 15 days (MCL 35.23). The page also lists a Michigan Peacetime Veterans Trust Fund, "emergency assistance for honorably discharged peacetime veterans 65+ who have service 180 days". The State's trust fund statute has no peacetime programme, so ask the department which fund a peacetime application lands in; the county's own millage fund and its advisory committee's funds are the likelier payers, and the Veterans Advisory Committee "review[s] and approve[s] requests brought to the Committee through the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Committee and other funds where the Director ha[s] concerns". The amounts and the full application papers are not published; apply at the Veterans' Service Center, 1903 Marquette Avenue, Suite A101, Muskegon, 231-724-7143. The department's food bank, Tuesdays and Thursdays by appointment, and its rides and notary service sit alongside the cash aid (see the Muskegon County veterans affairs entry).
