Columbus City Cemeteries: Veteran's Columbarium Fees

Columbus charges $100 on a weekday or $200 at a weekend to place a veteran's ashes in the city cemeteries' Veteran's Columbarium, against $300 and $500 to inter ashes in a family lot. The Code sets long-term storage in a marked columbarium drawer at $200; the Cemeteries page says $25.

Also called: cemetery, columbarium, cremation, ashes, burial, Riverdale Cemetery, Porterdale Cemetery, Columbus, Public Works, 9-13.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Columbus Consolidated Government runs the city cemeteries, among them Linwood, Porterdale, East Porterdale and Riverdale, where the American Legion marked a veterans' section; the Riverdale office at 1000 Victory Drive keeps records for all of them. Fees under Code section 9-13 (as amended in 2018). - Installing cremation ashes in the Veteran's Columbarium: $100 on a weekday, $200 at a weekend. - Interring ashes in an owned burial lot, for comparison: $300 and $500. - Application and recording fee: $25. - Long-term storage in a marked drawer in the Veteran's Columbarium: $200. A discrepancy. The Public Works Cemeteries page prints the same fees except the drawer, which it gives as $25. The Code is the ordinance; ask the cemetery office which applies before paying. What the City does not say. Neither the Code nor the page says who may be placed in the Veteran's Columbarium or what proof is asked; bring the DD-214. Burial in a national cemetery, with a VA headstone or niche cover, costs a veteran's family nothing for the grave itself; see VA's burial benefits. The City's indigent burial and cremation programme, for people with no assets or family, is qualified through the Department of Family and Children Services and is not veteran-specific.
