Montana Veteran Designation on a Driver’s License or ID Card

A "veteran" mark on a Montana licence or ID card, free to add but only at an issue, renewal or replacement, so the ordinary card fee applies. It proves status for the state park camping discount.

Also called: veteran designation, driver license, ID card, 10-2-1301, DD214, proof of service, discount.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Section 10-2-1301 lets a person have veteran status shown on a Montana driver's licence or identification card. The Department of Military Affairs verifies the status on documentation the applicant supplies, and the applicant asks for the designation when they apply for, renew or seek replacement of the card. Proof can be a certified copy of a DD-214 showing an honorable discharge, a VA health care card, a retired military ID card, or documentation from the Montana Veterans Affairs Division confirming veteran status. The Motor Vehicle Division route is either in person at a driver licence exam station or by mail with the application form. The fee point is the one that catches people. There is no extra charge for the designation itself, but it can only be added at an issue, renewal or replacement, so a veteran who wants it mid-cycle pays the ordinary replacement fee for a new card. Waiting for the next renewal costs nothing. What it is useful for. Section 23-1-105(2)(c) accepts a Montana driver's licence indicating veteran status as proof for the 50 percent state park camping discount, alongside a DD-214 or a VA identification card. More broadly, it is a single document that answers the question in front of a counter clerk without carrying a discharge certificate, which is the reason most states have adopted one. What it is not. Montana does not attach a statutory right to a retail military discount to the designation, unlike some states. A private business offering one does so voluntarily. The designation also does not establish eligibility for any benefit in its own right; every Montana program runs on its own definition and its own evidence rule.
