Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The State rule is IC 10-17-10; see the Indiana entry on the county burial allowance. The county set its amount in County Code section 30.06, "Veteran's grave marker allowance" (Ord. 1-2-14 of 2001, amended 2012 and by Ord. 2023-25 of November 6, 2023): "The County Board of Commissioners shall contribute not more than $200 to the expense of a grave marker for each eligible veteran or spouse, all as authorized and set forth in I.C. 10-17-10 et. seq." The claim is filed with the Commissioners and states the service, death and discharge and that the body was buried "in a decent and respectable manner in a cemetery or burial ground". What the office says. The survivors' page: "Morgan County offers a $200 county burial allowance reimbursement &/or an $80 allowance to offset the cost of setting of the headstone/marker. The Funeral Home will typically fill this out with next-of-kin. If they do not, or if you need to file for one further down the road, contact us." The $80 setting allowance is not in the published code; ask the office how it is paid. Who qualifies, and a gap between the code and the statute. Section 30.06 still covers a resident veteran who died in service "or after receiving an honorable discharge", and the spouse or surviving spouse. Since 2025 (P.L. 238-2025) IC 10-17-10-1 takes any discharge other than those that bar the State's military family relief fund, so a general discharge qualifies under the statute, and it now also covers a body cremated with the cremains not yet interred; the county code, current only through December 2024, has not been amended to match. A family refused on either ground should cite the statute. The statute caps any county allowance at $1,000, one claim per decedent.
