Montgomery County Veterans Service Commission: Rides to Medical Appointments

Rides to any medical appointment in Montgomery County, not only the VA, for a veteran with an honorable or general discharge and no other way to get there: an RTA bus pass by mail, paratransit for a veteran who cannot reach a stop, and since June 2026 the commission's own vehicle.

Also called: transportation, rides, medical transportation, RTA bus pass, paratransit, Dayton VA, doctor appointment.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Every Ohio commission must arrange regular transport to the VA medical centres serving the county (Revised Code 5901.03(H); see the Ohio entry). Montgomery County's goes further: it covers a verified appointment with any medical provider in the county, for a veteran with no other way to get there. How it works. Send the transportation application at least ten business days before the appointment, with every DD-214 (once only, if the commission already has it), proof of county residence, a federal or state photo ID and the appointment itself. The commission checks the appointment and mails a Greater Dayton RTA bus pass. A veteran who cannot walk to a stop because of a disability may get RTA paratransit instead. For an appointment made at the last minute, call 937-225-4801 with the trip times and addresses, and the commission arranges a ride when nothing else is available. Its own vehicle. The commission's page still says it cannot carry clients in a county vehicle. That has changed: it bought a vehicle with an Ohio Department of Transportation grant, took delivery in spring 2026, and its July 2026 minutes show riders moving from a contract carrier onto it, with RTA and other carriers still used as needed. In 2025 it paid for 3,143 rides, and in June 2026 it made 329. Who qualifies. A Montgomery County resident with an honorable or general discharge shown on the DD-214. No rating is needed.
