Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Monroe County Veteran Services is at 202 South K Street, Suite 5, Sparta, WI 54656, open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by appointment only: "we will no longer be accepting walk-in appointments. Please call our office to schedule an appointment @ 608.269.8618." The State's CVSO directory lists 608-269-8726 and 608-269-8727 for the same office; fax 608-269-8893. The Veterans Service Officer is Charles E. Weaver ([email protected]), in the post since 2014, with Assistant Veterans Service Officer Allen J. "AJ" Kirkland and administrative associate Amanda Walbrun. What it does. The office "assists Veterans, their widows and or their dependents with applications for compensation, pensions, VA application for healthcare, and other benefits". Its FAQ adds: "There is no need for a Monroe County Veteran to travel outside of our area to file a claim ... There is no charge for any of our services." It will complete the VA health care form 10-10EZ with you and fax it, and may already hold your DD-214 or find it in the State's records. The Tomah VA Medical Center, 500 East Veterans Street, is in the county. The Commission and the aid. The county code (section 2-347) lists a three-member Veterans Service Commission among the boards the County Board appoints; Casey Moen was appointed on December 18, 2025 for a term ending 12/31/28. Under sections 45.81 and 45.86 the Commission grants aid to needy veterans and their spouses, surviving spouses, dependent children and parents out of a county levy, with the CVSO as its secretary. The county publishes no application form or meeting record for it, so a veteran in need starts by calling the office. Its budget shows the scale: the Veterans Relief account the Veterans Service Officer presented to the Administration and Personnel Committee on August 11, 2026 carries $250 for groceries, $250 for fuel and $2,500 for other aid in 2026 and again in 2027 ($3,907 in all with per diem for four Commission meetings a year), against $469 of aid actually paid in 2025. Graves. Under section 45.85 the county pays for the care of the graves of veterans and their spouses that a town, city or cemetery looks after, at no more than it charges for other graves. Cemeteries claim it on the office's Cemetery Request for Reimbursement form, "returned no later than 1 September of the current year", to the office; the county budgets $500 a year for it. Suicide prevention. The office works with the Monroe County Suicide Prevention Taskforce; the county holds donations in a Veterans' Suicide Prevention fund ($5,715 at December 31, 2025) beside a Veterans' Services donation fund ($1,945).
