Monroe County Auditor: Disabled Veteran Deductions and Credits
How the Monroe County Auditor takes Indiana's disabled veteran property tax benefits: the $350 service-connected credit, the $250 credit for a veteran at least 62 with a 10 percent rating, the deduction of 100 percent of assessed value for a totally disabled veteran's principal residence, and the donated-homestead deduction scaled 50 to 100 percent by rating - applied for with a VA pension certificate, award of compensation, disability compensation check or Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs certificate of eligibility.
Also called: property tax, deduction, credit, disabled veteran, IC 6-1.1-12-14, IC 6-1.1-12-14.5, Auditor, homestead, Bloomington, Ellettsville, Stinesville, Smithville.
The county's own page, under the Auditor, "Disabled Veterans Benefits", citing IC 6-1.1-12-14.5, IC 6-1.1-51.3-6, IC 6-1.1-51.3-5 and IC 6-1.1-12-14.
Veteran with Service-Connected Disability Credit: "A $350 credit to eligible disabled veterans. Eligibility includes serving in the US military or navy during any of its wars, was honorably discharged, and has a service-disconnected disability rating of at least 10%." (The page's "service-disconnected" is its own typo for service-connected.) It is also available to a surviving spouse of someone who would have qualified.
Veteran at least Age 62 with at least 10% Disability Credit: "A $250 credit", for a veteran who served at least 90 days, was honorably discharged and is at least 62 with a rating of at least 10 percent; also available to a surviving spouse, including of a member killed in action or who died on active duty or inactive duty training.
Totally Disabled Veteran Deduction: "A deduction of 100% of the assessed value of principal place of residence" - the dwelling, up to one acre of surrounding land and other qualifying residential improvements under IC 6-1.1-12-37(a)(2)(C). The State entries carry the rating the statute requires.
Deduction for Homestead Donated to Veteran: for a veteran honorably discharged after at least 90 days with a rating of at least 50 percent whose homestead was donated by an income-tax-exempt organization, the deduction of assessment follows the rating: 50-59% gets 50%, 60-69% gets 60%, 70-79% gets 70%, 80-89% gets 80%, 90-99% gets 90%, and 100% gets 100%.
Proof and where to apply. "To receive any of the above benefits Veterans will need to provide either a pension certificate, an award of compensation, or a disability compensation check issued by the US Department of Veterans Affairs, or a certificate of eligibility issued to the individual by the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs." Applications run through the Auditor's Office, 812-349-2510, Courthouse on the Square, 100 W Kirkwood Ave, Suite 209, or through the Monroe County Veterans Affairs Office, 812-349-2568, 214 W 7th St, Suite 100.
What the page has wrong. Its Totally Disabled Veteran Deduction paragraph repeats the "rating of at least 10%" wording of the $350 credit, which the statutes it cites do not; a veteran relying on the page should read IC 6-1.1-12-14 and the State entries instead.
