Mohave County Animal Shelter: Free Adoption for Combat Veterans

Since September 2, 2025, Mohave County's Resolution 2025-145 waives the adoption fee and first-year licence fee for one animal from the County Animal Shelter for a combat veteran who presents VA proof of combat-veteran status; the Board's in-meeting modification had said any veteran whose VA identification shows a service-connected disability. The shelter's fee schedule does not yet show the waiver.

On September 2, 2025 the Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution No. 2025-145, waiving the adoption fee and the first-year licensing fee for one animal from the Mohave County Animal Shelter. As proposed it was for "combat veterans seeking therapy animals". The Board approved it "with the modification that the fees are waived for veterans with V.A. identification as possessing a service connected disability", on a 5-0 vote, after supervisors said a DD-214 cannot show who is a combat veteran and that the VA health identification card shows a service-connected enrollee. The resolution's recorded text, read on October 12, 2026 in the Clerk of the Board's Laserfiche repository, makes eligible "combat veterans, as defined by applicable state and federal guidelines who present proof of their combat veteran status via a service related injury status issued by the United States Department of Veteran's Affairs", for a waiver of adoption fees for one animal per combat veteran; the standard application process and all standard adoption requirements still apply, the county licensing fee is waived for the first year following the adoption, fees required in the incorporated cities may still apply, and after the first year any licensing fees are the adopting veteran's responsibility. The adopted animal is intended to serve as a therapy or companion animal. What it is worth. The shelter's fee schedule charges $135 to adopt a dog and $85 for a cat, each including spay or neuter, shots and a microchip, and the dog price includes the licence; a one-year licence for an altered dog is $10. How to use it. Bring a VA-issued document showing a service-related injury, the recorded resolution's proof of combat-veteran status, to the shelter; the Board's in-meeting modification had said the VA health identification card showing a service-connected disability. The shelter's fee schedule and adoption pages had not been updated to show the waiver when read, so mention the resolution by number. The shelter also told the Board it has no other veterans' discount; it runs $25 specials on dogs over two years old or 40 pounds for anyone, and a $25 senior animal for a senior owner.
