Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Milton grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessors Department’s veterans page prints $821.60 under clause 22, $1,540.50 under 22A, $2,567.50 under 22B, $3,081.00 under 22C and $2,054.00 under 22E, with clause 22D full “with a cap of $2,500 after 5 years” as printed. Each amount is its statute doubled and raised by the fiscal 2027 adjustment of 2.7 per cent, what clauses 22I and 22J at 100 per cent produce; the page names no option, and no town meeting vote was found in the town’s online records, so ask the assessors to confirm. The page’s residency line still asks that the veteran have lived in Massachusetts for not less than five years before receiving the exemption or six months before entering the service, the wording the statute carried before the HERO Act. The Veteran’s Service page gives the agent’s cell, 617-251-7767, and the EOVS directory lists Declan Ware for Milton at the Council on Aging, 10 Walnut Street, the same director who serves Randolph; the office hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Milton Veteran’s Service: the Veteran’s Agent. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
