Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Millbury grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessors’ Personal Exemptions page prints $640 under clause 22 for a veteran rated at least 10 percent and $1,600 under 22E for a 100 percent rating. Each is the statutory amount raised 60 percent. The same page prints $800 under 37A, also the statute raised 60 per cent, so the addition reaches beyond the veterans’ clauses, which is what section 5C½ does and clause 22J does not; but the page prices no other veterans’ clause and no option by name, and no town meeting vote was found in the town’s online records, so ask the assessors to confirm. The page’s clause 17D line sits at $410 with its estate limit at $66,971, above the statute’s $175 and $40,000, which a clause 17F acceptance and a clause 17E acceptance can produce; the page names neither, so ask the assessors. The town serves from millburyma.gov, to which millbury-ma.org redirects. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Blackstone Valley Veterans’ Services District: Carl Bradshaw, Director (serves Millbury). Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
