Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Town of Middletown grants its veterans’ property tax exemptions under R.I. Gen. Laws 44-3-4, the one section that sets every Rhode Island city’s and town’s figure. The figures on this entry are dated and sourced one by one: the statutory figures come from the current text of 44-3-4 and the act that amended it for Middletown, and the town’s own figures, where it publishes them, come from its own page. 44-3-4 names Middletown with figures of its own, which replace the statutory ones for the exemptions listed. Where the section says the council “may, by ordinance”, the figure is a ceiling the General Assembly allowed, and it exists in Middletown only if the council adopted it. The town’s published figures are usually larger than the statutory ones, or are tax credits instead, and both are lawful: R.I. Gen. Laws 44-3-24 lets a council adjust every exemption at each revaluation so it keeps the same dollar saving it gave the year before, and several councils have turned their exemptions into credits. The figure that reaches a tax bill is the town’s current one, which is why the assessor is the last word. The service and discharge tests are the state’s, not the town’s: a council may set the amount, but under subsection (f) it must use the section’s eligibility dates, and 44-3-4.2 adds the further conflicts and expeditions that qualify. Evidence goes to the assessor once, by the last day for filing sworn statements, and stands while legal residence is unchanged. Middletown’s 2026 options took effect on passage on May 6, 2026; whether the council has adopted ordinances under them was not found on the town’s pages.

No disability rating is needed for the basic exemption, so the rating filter never hides this entry.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
