Miami-Dade Transit Patriot Passport: Free Transit for Veterans
A Miami-Dade resident with a VA service-connected disability rides Miami-Dade Transit free on a Patriot Passport EASY Card, whatever the income; other resident veterans ride free if their income is $38,686 a year or less. The county lists other than honorable discharges as eligible, though its document list still asks other veterans for a DD-214 showing an honorable discharge.
Also called: Patriot Passport, EASY Card, Metrorail, Metrobus, transit, free fare, Golden Passport, Transportation and Public Works.
Miami-Dade's Department of Transportation and Public Works issues the Patriot Passport, an EASY Card that rides Metrobus, Metrorail and Metromover free.
Who.
- A veteran with a service-connected disability who is a permanent resident of Miami-Dade, with no income limit. Bring the VA letter showing the percentage and the type of discharge.
- Any other veteran who is a permanent resident and whose annual income is $38,686 or less. Bring proof of income: consecutive pay stubs, the previous year's tax return or IRS transcript (or the IRS notice of non-filing with the wage and income transcript), or a W-2.
Both bring a valid Florida ID or driver licence showing a Miami-Dade address.
Discharge. The county's eligibility list accepts honorable, general (under honorable conditions), other than honorable, "inability to adjust" and voluntary discharges, and excludes only dishonorable and bad conduct discharges. Its list of documents for veterans without a disability still says "DD214 form as proof of an honorable discharge"; a veteran with a general or other than honorable discharge should cite the eligibility list.
Applying. Apply online, at the Golden Passport office on the first floor of the Stephen P. Clark Government Center, or at the 311 service centres at the Saffir Permitting Center, the South Dade Justice Center and the North Dade Regional Library; Coral Gables and Miami Beach residents have local options. The card is renewed every year, by mail, email or fax. Customer service: 786-469-5151.
