Meriden Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Meriden’s assessor page gives a $3,000 base veterans’ exemption, $6,000 with the state additional exemption, and a $5,000 local option on top. The city’s Code § 187-26 sets the local option at $500, and OLR’s 2023 survey recorded no local option.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Meriden.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Meriden’s assessor page gives the base veterans’ exemption for qualifying wartime service as $3,000 off the assessment of the residence or of a vehicle the veteran owns or leases, raised for a service-connected disability. Discharge papers and disability documents go to the City Clerk before October 1, and no reapplication is needed. A veteran under the state income limit doubles the base to $6,000 under C.G.S. 12-81g, applying between February 1 and September 30 and every two years. The page then gives a local option of a further $5,000, with examples of $8,000 and $11,000 in all. Meriden’s code sets the local option differently. Chapter 187, Article VIII, adopted on March 6, 2017 under 12-81(19) and 12-81f, gives in § 187-26 an additional local exemption of $500 to a veteran whose income does not exceed the state maximum; the eCode360 edition read is current to June 15, 2026 and lists no newer law. Meriden told OLR’s 2023 survey that it offered none of the municipal options. Ask the assessor which amount applies.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
