Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The City of Melrose grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a city can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessor’s Real Estate Tax Exemptions page prints clause 22 at $800 for a 10 per cent minimum service-connected disability or the Purple Heart and 22E at $2,000 for a 100 per cent total disability, the statutes doubled, beside 22A at $750, 22B at $1,250 and 22C at $1,500, the statutes unchanged, and full exemption under 22D, 22F and 22H. $800 and $2,000 are the statutes doubled where $750, $1,250 and $1,500 are the statutes unchanged, and no one option named in the section produces that mix - clause 22J at 100 per cent or section 5C½ at 100 per cent would double 22A to 22C too - so ask the assessors what the page rests on. No council vote was found in the city’s online records, and the page sets the application deadline at April 1, 2027. The Veterans’ Services’ own Veterans Property Tax Work-Off Program page and its application materials record a VPTWOP run by the Veterans Department under M.G.L. Ch. 59, Sec. 5N, worth up to $1,500 off the participant’s property tax bill in a tax year, the Veterans Department placing veterans in assignments from the Veterans Food Pantry to Memorial Day flag placement. The Veterans’ Services page names Tammy Shovelton the Veterans’ Services Director at City Hall, 562 Main Street, first floor (781-979-4188), where the EOVS directory lists Tamara Shovelton with the same office (781-979-4186), and describes the office’s chapter 115 emergency financial assistance for those in need; the page lists a Veterans Advisory Board and a monthly Veterans Food Mart among the office’s work. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Melrose Veterans’ Services: Tammy Shovelton, Veterans’ Services Director. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
