Medina County Recorder: Free DD-214 Recording and Veteran ID Card

The Recorder records a DD-214 free and returns the original with a certified copy, and issues a free veteran ID card on two forms of identification, where the statute would let it charge up to $2; the card is also the only ID Medina County Public Transit accepts for a veteran's free ride.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, county recorder, veteran ID card, veterans identification card, discharge, Sharon Ray, redaction, NGB-22, DD256.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Recording. The Medina County Recorder, Sharon A. Ray, 144 North Broadway Street, Room 117, Medina (330-725-9782), records an original or certified DD-214 at no cost during business hours and returns the original with a certified copy (Revised Code 317.24; see the Ohio entry on county recorders). The commission's ID-card page walks Guard and reserve members through the discharge documents each gets: a DD-214 for active duty, an NGB-22 for a Guard final discharge, an NGB-55 for a concurrent Army Reserve discharge and a DD-256 for a traditional reservist who never activated. The ID card. A veteran who records the discharge and shows a valid driver's license or state ID gets the Medina County Veterans Identification Card, free, where the statute would let the office charge up to $2. The card is unofficial - the commission's own page says it is not a valid form of identification for anything the office does not control - but it is the credential that matters locally: Medina County Public Transit accepts no other identification for a veteran's free ride (see the transportation entry). The office is in the county Administration Building at 144 North Broadway.
