Mecklenburg County Vehicle License Fee, repealed for 2026-27
Mecklenburg’s FY2026-27 tax ordinance repealed article II of chapter 70, the county vehicle license tax, so no county license fee is charged from July 1, 2026 - while the county’s codified code, last updated in July 2019, still prints the repealed article at $25.00.
Also called: license fee, decal, vehicle registration, Mecklenburg license, repealed.
Enactment clause 3 of Mecklenburg County's FY2026-27 tax ordinance, adopted unanimously by the Board of Supervisors on May 11, 2026, repeals "Article II of Chapter 70 (Sections 70-31 through 37) of the Mecklenburg County Ordinances" - the county vehicle license tax - along with sections 6-2 and 6-3, chapter 22 in its entirety, division 3 of article III of chapter 66 and section 50-67, and declares: "No license fees shall be hereafter charged by the County on activities previously enumerated in any of these said locations of the Mecklenburg County Code of Ordinances." From July 1, 2026, a Mecklenburg vehicle owner owes no county vehicle license fee; fees already owed and unpaid as of June 30, 2026 remain collectible with penalties and interest.
The county's codified code on the Municode library is versioned July 26, 2019 and still prints the repealed article: section 70-31 levies the tax, section 70-32 runs the license year July 1 to June 30 with payment due December 5, and section 70-33 sets the amount at $25.00 a year for an automobile, truck, motorcycle, motor scooter, bus or motor home, $18.50 for a licensed farm vehicle and $15.00 or $17.50 for National Guard vehicles by weight (Ordinance of August 14, 2017). Section 70-31 expressly limited the tax "subject to the limitations provided in state law, specifically Code of Virginia, §§ 46.2-752 and 46.2-755", which exempted plated disabled veterans' vehicles even while the fee stood.
A veteran who is charged a county license fee for a tax year after June 30, 2026 should cite the ordinance's enactment clause 3 and ask the Treasurer.
