Mecklenburg County Disabled Veteran Vehicle Tax Exemption

Mecklenburg grants the one-vehicle exemption on a dedicated application naming the vehicle by VIN, year, model and title number, in a county that assesses vehicles owned on July 1 and does not prorate.

Also called: car tax, personal property, vehicle tax, Mecklenburg car tax, 100% disabled, TDIU.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Mecklenburg applies the statewide one-vehicle exemption through the Commissioner of the Revenue on the "Application for Personal Property Tax Exemption for Veterans with a 100% Service-Connected Disability". The form asks for the vehicle's VIN, year, model and title number, and requires the VA certification of a 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability plus a copy of the disabled veteran's driver's license or photo ID, and the spouse's when the vehicle is jointly or solely owned by the spouse. The vehicle must be a passenger car, pickup or panel truck registered for personal use, owned by the veteran, jointly with the spouse, or solely by the spouse but used primarily by or for the veteran. The county taxes vehicles in their own classification: the FY2026-27 tax ordinance sets the rate for the class established under section 58.1-3506(A)(48) at $2.46 per $100, against $3.26 for general tangible personal property, $0.66 for machinery and tools and $0.10 for volunteer fire and EMS vehicles. Personal property is assessed for the full year on items owned on July 1 and the county does not prorate, so a vehicle acquired or disposed of after July 1 is reported to the Commissioner for correction rather than prorated. The state's car-tax relief applies to the first $20,000 of a qualifying vehicle's value.
